Who Are You Wearing?

Hurray!  Its Oscar Sunday!  Ok, actually I couldn't be any less excited.  I can't remember the last movie I saw in the theaters....I think it was Red.  That one with Bruce Willis and Morgan Freeman as retired federal agents....yep, I'm pretty sure that was it.  I think I'll go out on a limb here and say they aren't nominated for anything tonight.  Either way...the worst acting on ABC today is clearly happening on NBA Countdown.  And the winner for best unintentional comedy goes to....Kevin Durant for looking off camera as if to make sure he did a good job of saying "this is ABC, the home of the NBA Finals".  It was a tough one for him, he had to fight off Stuart Scott's eye.  Speaking of the NBA, I was happily reminded multiple times last week of how terrible the writers for FoxSports.com are.  How do these guys still have jobs?  Really?  Did I seriously read an article about Kobe Bryant's dominance over the league being officially done?  Oh wait, the reason is because he looked thirsty while he was playing at the All-Star game.  This was written by the same guy who said he would cry when Willie Roaf didn't get into the NFL Hall of Fame.  Oh please.  I guess I have just been spoiled by reading Bill Simmons on ESPN.

I don't want to brag, but I think I might be the best in the world at getting tiny pieces of shell in my eggs.  Pretty sure I've had to fish little white flakes out of the bowl at least the last 37 times I've made eggs.  Alright, sorry to backtrack to an earlier topic here...but are James Franco and Anne Hatheway really the best people they could get to host the Oscars?  Seriously?  They couldn't convince Billy Crystal to do it again?  Wait, they couldn't just piece together old clips of Billy Crystal hosting?  Even that would be better than James Franco.  If you've seen him host Saturday Night Live you know what I'm talking about.  What was I talking about again?  Oh yeah, scrambled eggs.  That's not very interesting.  Lets move on.

As if the video game gods hadn't screwed with me enough...they had one more "F-you" in store for me.  Imagine my surprise to see a notification from UPS on Friday afternoon that a package had been left for me at the office of my apartment building!  Imagine my excitement as I go to pick it up.  Imagine my disappointment to find out that they had delivered the game I ordered, but not the X-box.  Really UPS?  Why?  Why do you have to mess with me like this?  Why were they even shipped separately?  Didn't both packages come from the same place?  Well, I guess it was better off this way.  If they had delivered the X-box on Friday I probably wouldn't have left my apartment once all weekend.  If you couldn't tell, I'm clearly looking forward to feeling like I'm 13 years old all over again....now if only the people in charge of the Oscars would go back in time and find a good host!  Ah, forget it.  I probably won't even watch the show anyways.

Decision Points (that was George Bush's book right?)

Being pelted in the face by tiny bits of ice for 20 miles.....NOT FUN!  I swear I must have run up every last hill in Madison today.  Whats the worst part about adding a new loop to an old route?  Realizing right before the turn that you just added another 100 meter hill to an already difficult run.  As painful as this mornings run was, I have decided that I am really looking forward to doing it again (hopefully in better weather next time).  I then ask myself "why?"...and that question is quickly answered by the quart and a half of English toffee ice cream sitting next to me.  A little expensive, but totally worth it.

Wait a second...should I really be calling ice cream expensive?  I did order an X-Box yesterday, so I should probably redefine my idea of expensive.  The good news was that I found out I would be able to get away with buying the $200 model instead of the $300 model.  After that I decided "I might as well buy one today!"...easier said than done.  Good lord, I felt like Arnold Schwarzenegger looking for a Turboman doll.  They were sold out at Target, and the only ones they had at BestBuy came with Kinect.  I can only assume that looking at that shelf is what it must have been like finding a shelf full of Booster dolls (if you aren't familiar with the classic Christmas film "Jingle All the Way", these references will not make sense).  I thought to myself that this was the universe trying to tell me not to buy an X-Box.  And then when I tried to order one online, I got a message back saying my order could not be processed because there was a problem with my debit card.  Oh wow, I'm starting to get a little creeped out by this.  Good news is that the universe was not telling me to not buy an X-Box.  It was telling me to open a new bank account.  All I needed to do was realize that my billing address is NOT Madison, it's Winona.  Second try, card accepted.

Ok, so normally I only blog about running and other stupid crap that goes on in my life (wait, I have a life?).  So I just want to warn anyone reading this that the last paragraph here might be a little bit more...how should I say this.....angry.  In case you don't know, I visited friends in the Twin Cities quite a few times over the summer.  I have also driven to or through the Twin Cities a handful of times since moving to Madison.  I've told this to people from Winona, and people in Madison, but never to people who live in the Twin Cities...so strap in.  Most people I know who live in the Twin Cities, don't give a damn about people who don't.  News flash....Minneapolis and St. Paul aren't that much cooler than the rest of the state.  I was invited to visit people in the Twin Cities this weekend, and also next weekend.  Yeah, not gonna happen.  My idea of fun is not driving for 4 hours after work on a Friday night, and then driving 4 hours back to Madison (tired and hungover I might add) on a Sunday morning.  I understand that goes two ways, and other people don't want to have to drive 4 hours to Madison, but I've invited people to Winona before too and most often didn't get any type of response.  So you know what?  Twin Cities dudes, consider this your open invitation to come stay with me in Madison any time you want.  I'm deciding that until you come here, I won't be making any plans to come to St. Paul.

..........and yes, I am fully expecting you guys to give me a hard time when I end up coming to see you before you see me.

Let's Set Some Things Straight

Ok, first and foremost...as much as I miss college, I'm pretty happy with the way life is now.  To make a long story short, there is no way I could go back to doing that every weekend.  Just don't ask...you probably don't want to know.  As usual it was good to see all the guys again, but I wish I could have had a better race on Saturday.  Item #2 that needs to be set straight: The writing is on the freakin' wall...its time to embrace racing longer distances.  I came to the realization today that me being angry about a bad 3K is like a miler being angry about a bad 100 meter dash.  Yep, its official.  Looks like I'm a road warrior now.

I really wish I had more to talk about this week.  Oh wait, I just remembered the Grammy's were on last night.  It's been a while since I had a decent music rant.  I have to ask...who told Gwyneth Paltrow that she could sing?  Wow, someone tell her to stick to acting.  Oh, you mean she isn't very good at that either?  So how did she get famous again?  I could have guaranteed that she would be the worst performance of the night, but then Katy Perry took the stage.  Just to prove that they are the best cable network at abso-freakin-lutely everything, CBS decided they needed to top the train wreck that was the Superbowl halftime show.  Ugh.

I'm just going to stop now.  If all four of you reading this were hoping for gold this week, I'm sorry.  My apartment is a mess, I need to do laundry, wash my dirty dishes, and buy groceries tonight.  Not to mention Monday Night Raw is on tonight.  (Insert crappy finishing one-liner here)  Sorry, I'm really mailing it in this week.

I Probably Won't Miss that Toenail Anyways

You haven't truly started training until you lose that first toenail.  I cut my first one all the way off earlier this week.  And it couldn't have happened any sooner, with my first race of the season coming in less than a week.  Ok, I am probably using the word "race" kind of loosely.  The annual Saint John's University vs. Collegeville Track Club showdown rarely has thrilling performances (or greater than 100 fans in attendance) so yes, this is pretty much a glorified work-out.  Although, if I'm not mistaken the current American record for the 10k was set in a "glorified work-out".  So here is what I know.  I know I am feeling as thin and fit as I have ever been, and I know I haven't raced in over 4 months.  Unfortunately the second part of that last sentence cancels out the first.  And my fall season was pretty bad, so I don't know if I really want to count those races or not.  If I had to pick between running a PR and being able to sleep more than 1 hour the night before a race...I might actually pick getting a full nights sleep.  In case you were not aware, I PRed in 23 out of 24 track races over a 3 year period, so I'm hoping I don't have to pick between those choices.

In other Track and Field news, America's finest (over-rated?) milers were taken to school last night by Winona's finest miler.  If the fate of the world came down to a 1 mile race, I would pick Garrett Heath over Alan Webb any day of the week.  Sadly, 10 years from now some other asshole behind a keyboard will probably be saying that they would pick a no-namer to beat Lukas Verzbicas any day of the week.  Have fun at Nike U, Luke.  Can't wait for Alberto to ruin your career too.

Wow.  This might be a first.  I have something to talk about other than running or television.  For the second time, my phone decided that it would "forget" my voicemail password.  Ok, I don't know what went wrong, and honestly I don't care what went wrong.  All I know is that for some reason my phone decided that the 6 number password that I set was not the right one.  Oh, but no worries.  Tracfone decided to give me 10 free minutes for my troubles.  Its not like I spent 30 minutes on hold (3 SEPARATE TIMES!!!!) to take care of an issue that took 5 minutes to fix....wait, I did?  So that would be why I flipped out on the customer service woman who finally had the brilliant idea of reseting my password.  I'm a big fan of the prepaid cell phone, but if I ever have a problem like this again Tracfone is going to have one less customer.

Is there a football game on tonight or something?  Is that why there is 4 hours of pregame show on TV?  Quick question...what is the deal with FOXs "red carpet"?  Did they really need to build a set for 20 fans (I'm actually starting to think the people there work for FOX) to watch an endless stream of C-list celebrities show up to the Superbowl?  In other news, its good to see that who ever plans the halftime show is finally getting over the infamous "Wardrobe Malfunction" incident.  But you really couldn't do any better than the Black Eyed Peas?  They're alright, but they are no Prince, no Paul McCartney, and no Tom Petty.  Well, Will I Am did appear in that Pepsi commercial with the old Bob Dylan footage (which by the way, I want to throw up every time I see it)....at least the commercials are always good.  And does anyone actually care which team John Travolta's new son is going to cheer for?  Thats some quality journalism right there from Michael Strahan.

I think I just heard the most ridiculous statement ever uttered on television.  Some guy on FOX just said most fans just think the NFL labor negotiations are "just Billionaires vs. Millionaires, but its actually more complicated than that".  Umm, what?  Sorry sir, but you are absolutely wrong.  Billionaires vs. Millionaires is EXACTLY what the issue is here.  The players are getting paid millions of dollars to play a game....let me repeat that....to play a game.  Hey, I'm pretty good at Cube Crash on Facebook, someone should be paying me a million dollars to do that.  The owners are even worse.  These guys are making billions of dollars to watch a game.  Please, lock the players out.  The only people on earth who are more greedy than NFL owners are MLB owners.  Please, have a lockout.  Sure, all the sports channels will keep covering the NFL even if they don't have a season.  However, a lockout might give Brett Favre just enough time to get healthy enough for one more season!  Lets hope not.  I'm probably cursing the Packers just by wanting them to win.  Again, lets hope not.  Nothing would make me happier than to see Aaron Rodgers hold up the Lombardi trophy and say "Suck it, Brett!"

Wow, Sunday Television is Pretty Bad

I am going to have to start running later on Sundays.  Either that or....sorry, I can't think of a good joke here.  I'll just cut to the chase.  I'm watching the movie "Out Cold" right now.  I can't believe its actually on TV.  The only reason I am watching it is for Zach Galifinakis.  I'm sure he will have some good lines.  This is one of those movies where it looked really cool when it came out (probably because I was 13 then), and now you wonder if more than 12 people have seen it...ok, the guy who played Champ Kind in "Anchorman" just showed up.  I'm not completely sure, but I think the guy who wears the super-short shorts in Reno 911 is also in this thing, and Roy from "The Office".  I am either going to laugh hysterically, or jump of a bridge halfway through.

Work is still good...alright, got that out of the way.

Believe it or not, I don't really have anything new to say about running.  Which is kind of nice for a change.  I will say though its a good thing my parents brought me my new shoes yesterday.  I probably put more miles into my last pair than any other with out even knowing.  Like I mentioned last week the next 10 weeks will probably be hell....but if I manage to make it to the other side in one piece its going to be a very good spring/summer of racing.

Random thoughts of the day...
-When I was out running this morning, I saw a woman who was the complete opposite of the lady from "Seinfeld" who didn't swing her arms when she walked...this woman looked like she was practicing speed skating, it was hilarious.
-So the Pro Bowl is on later....in a related story, no one in Wisconsin cares.
-Only one more week of my bedroom looking like a homeless shelter.  Yeah, thats right I'm finally buying a new mattress and bed frame.  Darn, I had enjoyed sleeping on a mattress on the floor sooo much for the last two months.  Now all I have to do is stop throwing all my clothes on the floor.
-My parents came to visit yesterday.  I think they spent more time in the car than they did with me.  I hope I am never as terrified of driving on the highway in the dark as my Dad is.
-In addition to my new running shoes, my parents also brought my guitar for me yesterday....also in a related story, I still really suck at guitar.  However, that still might be a better option than watching "Out Cold".
